Question 1 : Like me – Like me NOT

Image of a man using a computerOne of the most common interview questions is, “What did you like most, and what did you dislike most about your last job?”

When you give your job interview answer for this question you want to make sure that you do not speak too negatively about your prior company. If you do so, this may lead the person that you are interviewing with to assume that you will do the same with their company. Job interview answers are not always the easiest to spin into something positive. You may need to write, rewrite and rewrite again to get this answer correct.

Try an answer something like this: “I enjoyed the company because they rewarded the employees when all goals were completed. It showed us that they really cared about our hard work and us. I would have enjoyed the it more if they would have had more advancement opportunities.”  

Question 2 : weakness VS. STRENGTHS

Employers tend to ask about your strengths and weaknesses. They may form the questions like this, “What is your greatest weakness?” and “What is your greatest strengths?”

Most individuals can come up with a job interview answer for strengths in a heartbeat, but can’t come up with a weakness that they are willing to share with others. So they stumble over the answer and end up sounding a little weak in the interview. Make sure you do not refer to your weakness as such, spin it to a positive.

So look at the better way to have a job interview answer for this question: “I enjoy taking pride in my work so I tend to take a little too much time checking it. Luckily I have learned some new features of Microsoft office 2007 that have helped me to better and more efficiently check my work.

Question 3 : The boss is wrong!
There are times when interview questions that will ask you about your judgment. They may ask you, “What would you do if your boss told you to do something and you knew that was the wrong way to do it?

This question may make you start to squirm a little in your seat. How in the world are you going to answer this without getting them upset? Try a job interview answer along these lines: “To be honest with you, I’m not sure what I would do. If it was something minor I may just do as I was told, and go with the flow, but if it was something that I knew was really wrong I would have to talk to him about it.”

You may also want to mention the fact that some people take confrontation differently than others. There are supervisors that you can approach and would have no problem with you letting them know they are wrong. There are also supervisors that do not care to have their authority challenged, even in private conversations.

Question 4 : Have you done your homework?

Sometimes the interviewer will ask you this question, “How did you get ready for this interview?” or “What do you know about our company?”
 
OK, your first responses is Oh no, not a pop quiz! I can’t do that! There has to be a way to avoid this job interview answer! Alas, this is not so!
 
Make sure that when you do send in your resume that you look up the company on the Internet and see if they have a website. See what they are about, what their mission statement is, and if this would be a company you would want to work for. Then a great job interview answer would look like this: “When I found the ad in the Anytown Daily Press I did a Google search on your company and went to your website.

I was impressed by your mission statement and the amount of community service that you do every year, that is something that is important to me as well. I looked over your annual report and noticed that the company had a slight increase in the equity this year. I think that with me in the accounting office that I will be able to assist the Accounting Manager in at least doubling that target. As you can see on my resume…”

As you can tell, the interviewee did their homework, and was able to show the employer that he or she had as well. It’s important to keep the employer on your side. The best thing to do is to have knowledge, for knowledge is power.

Cover Letter Tips: Making Yourself Irresistible Part II

Here are cover letter tips to keep your resume from ending up in the trash can:
>> Don’t just parrot your resume.

Your cover letter, though short and simple, is an asset that will pave the way for your future income, and a lot of prospective employees make the mistake of writing exactly what is on the resume.  Don’t do this—it shows a lack of creativity.  Your cover letter should expand and serve as a bridge to your resume.  Since it’s the first thing they see, make it count.  This goes back to the previous point- it’s one of the crucial cover letter tips.  Brag and talk about how great you are but don’t just summarize your resume.

>> Don’t come across as a Harvard prude, even if you are one.

Professionalism is nice, but no one wants to work with a pompous ass.  If that’s not how you talk on a daily basis, tone it down.  If that is how you talk, you’ve got bigger problems than I can solve.  Write like a kindergartner.  Okay, I don’t mean write sentences like “Jane likes jobs.  Jane wants money.”  I mean be clear and simple, and sound out your words while you write to make sure they aren’t too sophisticated.  And definitely don’t talk about how this is one of the awesome cover letter tips you found here.  You don’t have to spill the beans like a kindergartener would either, just be clear, concise and readable.

>> Email letters should be short and sweet, like a one-night stand.

Long emails waste time that could be better spent on Facebook.  Once they open your resume they’ve decided to invest some time in you, so they are psychologically prepared for more information.  Einstein once said, “Everything should be as simple as it is, but not simpler.”  Anything more will make you seem like a possible future headache.

>> Attack them from all angles.

If you don’t have submission guidelines, send the resume as an attachment and an email.  Then point it out.  “I’m such a great fella I sent this as an email AND an attachment.”  The message is you are the type of person who will make their life easier.

>> The most crucial of the cover letter tips- Don’t be weak.

“My professional resume is included if you would like to look at it.”   Subconsciously, you just told them you aren’t even sure if your resume is worth their time.  Grow a pair.  Say something direct and casual like, “As you can see in my resume, I’ve worked in the midget porn industry for forty-three years.”  EXPECT them to read it, and they are much more likely to do so.  Ok, so that actual line is not one of the cover letter tips you should utilize, but you get what I mean.

Most employers could go their whole lives without reading another resume  if it was up to them, so that’s when truly helpful cover letter tips come in handy.  If they are not in a hurry to hire, the last thing they want to do with their time is pick through anonymous resumes.  A cover letter gives you a quick chance to tell them why they should take a closer look at you.

Here are cover letter tips to keep your resume from ending up in the trash can:

Name-dropping works.  For one, an employer feels a subconscious obligation to give you a solid chance if you have a mutual contact.  In fact, they will probably have to find a good reason not to hire you if it might affect their social life or business.  Also, human beings are ethnocentric creatures — which means they’re hesitant to let anyone into their world that they don’t know.  This is one of the oldest cover letter tips ever used, but it still works.   Establish a connection and they’re more likely to take a chance.

This is one of the cover letter tips you need to keep at the forefront of your mind.  Even if they know you don’t know them, saying their name gets their attention, as if the letter is truly to them.  It makes it more personal.  Besides, if you don’t have the brains to research a name, they don’t want you.  It shows you care about the position and are willing to do some homework.  Otherwise you’re like that shameless spammer on Facebook who is always promoting his band that no one likes—“Be my friend!  Be my friend!”  No one likes that guy, so don’t act like him.
 
>> Keep it Conversational.

Keeping the cover letter conversational is one of the best cover letter tips out there.  Show some personality and the reader is less likely to crumple it up and shoot a basket.  This type of language makes people feel like you have rapport even if you’ve never met.

>> Brag about yourself.

While your dedication to telling the world how awesome you are hasn’t scored you many friends in the past, here is your chance to put it out there without everyone leaving the room talking about what a douche bag your are.  Finally.  Tell them why you’re the man or woman for the job.  Having the confidence to state it straight up sends the signal that you really are qualified.

The more specific, tangible, and measurable the better because it tells them you’re not just winging it.

>> Always talk about your achievements.

They don’t just want another employee—they want the best, and achievements mark you as a high-value individual.  Use bullet points to cover more space, creating the illusion there is more information than there actually is.  Most cover letter tips will tell you not to list your accomplishments, but this is where you want to brag away.

Good leaders may also exhibit bad leadership traits every now and then. But if a leader consistently exhibit bad traits, then you better do something about it because the organization may suffer because of such a leader. Here are the bad leadership traits.
  • Loves big strategies but no thought for implementation. It's good to dream. But you gotta wake up to implement and chase after those dreams!
  • Too much focused on rules. No problem on rules but there are times that they have to be bent to accommodate a bigger good.
  • Ruling with an iron hand. There is no armed rebellion in the workplace isn't there? Since there is none, there is really no need for ruling with an iron hand!
  • Impulsiveness. A leader should think carefully before embarking on any project and say anything at all!
  • Complicates conflicts instead of resolving them. A leader should learn how to manage conflicts and not inflame them.
  • Unwillingness to learn. Given the present situation of the global economy and how the business setting changes continuously, learning is imperative.
  • Reacting negatively to criticism. A leader should keep an open ear to criticism, whether good or bad. It might lead to something good if taken in the right way.
  • Approves unethical business. This is a sure-fire guarantee that your organization will go the way of Enron. Beware of leaders who approve unethical business!

These bad leadership traits can be found all over the workplace. Avoid them. If you find any of these, then you better device some strategy on how to deal with them.

  • Too much love for self. A bad leader puts himself above others. In matters involving the organization, he would rather protect his own interests that that of the organization.-job-
  • Poor communication. He assumes a lot and expects others to play by his rules. Yet, he rarely communicates his expectations, his goals and the things that he wants the organization to work on. Poor communication is the cause of numerous preventable conflicts. That is why this is a bad trait for a leader to have.
  • Unwillingness to Take Risks. Whether in a business setting or in a non-profit situation, risks are inevitable. A leader who does not want to take risks is either deluded or living in an entirely closed shell!
  • Indecisiveness. A bad leader wavers in his decisions. He decides one thing, then change it again. Then change it again soon after that. People can get easily confused because of this indecisiveness.
  • Laissez Faire. This leader simply lets things happen as they happen. He does not want to participate in constructing the reality that would lead to benefit the organization.
  • Poor Self Management. If you cannot manage yourself, how do you expect to manage a whole set of people who are working on different issues and tasks at the same time? Personal self management is a necessity for any good leader.
  • Playing Favorites. Everything in an organization must be merit-based. Rewards and even punishments must be commensurate to output and performance. If a leader plays favorites, then he is compromising the long-term health of the organization.
  • Lack of Accountability. When a leader just wants to do things his own way without regard of accountability, you have take note. This is the beginning of a lack of accountability which might lead to a leader going astray.
  • Deceitful. If a leader starts telling stories to one person and then a different version of that story to another person, then deceit has taken hold of the leader. There is probably some kind of cover-up going on.
  • Too passionate for power, wealth and prestige. Leaders are entitled to wealth, power and prestige. But if he passionate only for these things, then something has gone awry! He is no longer thinking right for his office and for the organization.

A vision or so-called "dream" is created by the leader to encourage the followers to pursue their goals. The leader sets an example for his followers by acting appropriately to achieve the goals. He inspires his followers to sustain commitment and not drift away from their goals while creating a balance of attention between the progress and mental state of the followers.

The followers also become the product of transformation while the leader attempts to transform the organization. Transformational leadership is carried out with charisma that motivates positively with enthusiasm. The leader is basically concerned with the individual success of his followers.

Transformational leadership is another form of leadership, apart from charismatic leadership, that gathers their followers through style and personality. As it is used to move a group in a new direction, it was initially based as business leadership. Such leaders not only inspire but they also stimulate individuals to think differently, think out-of-the-box while their needs are taken care of by the leader. You need to be more energetic and enthusiastic as a transformational leader, in order to avoid people falling asleep while you preach. With good content and integrity, you can present change to your people while imparting inspiring speeches that may improve the communication gap between the follow and the leader.

Interaction is important as the transformational leader may apply ideas of the followers themselves while chasing a goal. Transformational leadership comes through awareness of what is good, bad or unimportant for enhancing the needs of the people with motivation. You can succeed as a transformational leader when you influence the idea, conviction, example and extraordinary ability to mobilize your followers to make things work accordingly.

Emotions are critical to business success because they drive behaviors. Companies that achieve an emotional buy-in from consumers and employees will have a competitive advantage in a world of increasing commoditization.
Business has a long tradition of ignoring emotions in favor of rationality. But a growing body of scientific evidence reveals that subconscious feelings drive decisions, up to 95% of which are made through the brain's emotion centers and only then filtered into its cognitive parts.

Psychologists, neuroscientists and behavioral economists now agree that leaders who fail to understand how emotions drive actions will ultimately fail.
Emotionally astute leaders leverage feelings to gain employee commitment, engagement and performance, according to Dan Hill, CEO of Sensory Logic and author of Emotionomics: Leveraging Emotions for Business Success (Kogan Page, 2008). However, there are two barriers that create a trust gap between leaders and their staffs:

  1. Have a pen/pencil and paper available for notes.
  2. Bring resumes and a folder or portfolio to hold your materials.
  3. Take the time to find out what companies will be represented before the day of the career fair.
  4. Research information about the participating companies and organizations prior to approaching the recruiters. Use the Internet, news sources and career fair materials to learn about the companies' booths you plan to visit. You can impress a recruiter by knowing about his or her company and can discuss its current situation.
  5. Use time wisely. Determine where employers are located and in what order to visit them. Focus on three companies that you are truly interested in.
  6. Broaden your focus and include many types of employers. For instance, you may not have considered working for a hospital, but hospitals recruit and hire professionals in many different fields (e.g., management, information systems, or health care).
  7. Be aware of time demands on employers. Do not monopolize an employer's time. Ask specific questions and offer to follow up after the fair, as appropriate.
  8. Be direct. Introduce yourself, including your name and career interests. If you are job-seeking, state the type of position in which you are interested. If you are gathering information, let employers know that you are only interested in materials and information. Remember to use good eye contact and a firm handshake. Career fairs are the perfect place to use your elevator speech.
  9. Make sure you learn from the recruiter employment and/or hiring trends, skills necessary for different jobs, current openings, salary, benefits, training, and other information about the organization. Also make sure you know whom to contact for follow-up discussions.
  10. Ask the employer for the next steps in the recruitment process and try to obtain the recruiter's business card for follow-up discussions/correspondence.

Career Tips > 9 Job Search Tips for New Graduates

College graduation season is set to launch millions of youthful job seekers into an already depressed employment market. If you’re among the masses, realize that preparation is key. Here’s what you need to do to get hired.

1) Edit your profile. Those drunken party photos might have impressed your Facebook friends, but now they could dissuade a prospective employer from hiring you, says Stephen Miles, vice chairman of executive search firm Heidrick & Struggles and co-author of Your Career Game. Recruiters do extensive web searches on people they intend to hire, including checking social media sites like Facebook, MySpace and Twitter. If you’ve posted compromising photos or a stupid status update (i.e. Nice day. I think I’ll call in sick and go to the beach…) it could cost you a job. Get rid of it.

2) Do your homework. Don’t just figure that you can post a resume on monster.com and find work, says Janice Bryant Howroyd, CEO of staffing company AppleOne. You ought to study all aspects of your chosen field and seek information about the companies doing business in that area. Go to the company web sites and see if they’re posting open positions, too. If you send a resume, tailor it specifically to the job you’re seeking, Howroyd suggests.

3. Prepare to relocate. Live in a city where the job prospects are bleak? You can vastly increase your chance of getting work by seeking employment in other zip codes. The folks at job search site Indeed.com recently came up with a list of the best and worst cities to find work.

4) Think small. Many graduates focus on big, brand-name companies, but it’s the smaller and mid-sized companies that are doing most of the hiring now, Howroyd says. Taking jobs that “no one wants” is often an opportunity that no one else sees, adds Nathan Bennett, professor of management at Georgia Tech and the other co-author of Your Career Game. A first job is an opportunity to get experience. The smaller the company, the thinner the staff, the more likely you are to learn a wide array of skills.

5) Set targets. Set goals every day for either sending out a set number of resumes; filling out a set number of applications or finding a set number of new opportunities. Don’t hit the beach until you’ve hit your goal. You can’t change the job market, but you can determine how hard you try. Trying harder than your peers makes you the one most likely to get work.

6) Be persistent. If you go to an interview and don’t hear from the employer, follow up with a phone call. If they gave the job to another person, don’t be angry — be interested. Politely ask the hiring manager if he or she can tell you whether there was something that the other person did that particularly impressed them or something that you did wrong. If your approach is respectful and aimed at learning (rather than second-guessing their actions), they’re likely to help you better position yourself for the next interview. And if they tell you that you were fine, the other person was just more qualified, don’t be shy about asking them to keep you in mind for the next opportunity. If you don’t have a job in three or four months, call again and see if anything has opened up.

7) Work your network. Ask your friends, your parents, your parents’ friends, if they know of anything that would suit you. Check in with your college career office and attend their alumni functions. When there are hundreds of people applying for a given job, a personal referral can make your application stand out.

8) Be a temp. Some companies may not be willing to hire permanent full-time staff, but need help. You can sign up with a temporary company, like AppleOne, that will send you out on a daily basis to these companies. The benefits: You earn money; you get to know employers and employers get to know you.

9) Don’t despair. It’s a rotten job market, so it could take time to get work. And when you do get work, it may not be the ‘perfect job’ that you envisioned. Keep a good attitude and don’t let it get to you. Every job — even a nightmare job — is experience on your resume and a potential reference for a new employer. Do you best no matter where you end up working, and chances are good that you’ll get a better job in no time.

1. List 3 things which made the interview a success.

b) For each of these three items, explain what you are going to do to improve for your next interview.

3. Were some of the interviewer’s questions difficult to answer? What were they? How would you respond if asked again?

4. What skills/qualities was the employer looking for? How could you better present these skills next time?

5. What further information do you need in order to determine if you would accept an offer?

6. What do you like/dislike about this company? (Consider a graph or other way to rate and compare the companies with which you have interviewed).

  • Respond to the question positively without stating specific amounts. (Examples: “I’m earning in the low 30s.” “As a student, my jobs to this point have been geared toward gaining experience and making money to cover my educational costs.”)

  • Mention your desired salary, either saying that salary is negotiable depending upon the position or giving a $3-5,000 range (if you know the market value for the position and for someone with your skills and background). You may also use terms like “competitive” or “open” if you are responding to this question on an application form.

  • Know your salary requirements as well as what you hope to make. You shouldn’t mention these in your response to the salary history question, but you need to give this some thought for when you get to the negotiating stage.

  • Be prepared to respond to a request for previous salaries in an interview. It can be handled by responding without stating specific amounts. Avoid specific amounts if at all possible.

  • Prepare a list of your positions (in reverse chronological order) for your own reference and just in case an employer in which you are very interested is absolutely adamant. (This will not happen often!) The list should include name of each company or organization, your position title, your compensation, and a brief synopsis of your position.

  • Research Salaries in Your Field: Look at recent salary surveys, talk to others working in your field, and contact your trade or professional association to find out what other people are paid for doing the same work.

  • Be Flexible: When going through a salary negotiation you aren't likely to get the exact amount of money you want. You will probably have to compromise. The trick is to figure out how much you are willing to compromise and what you will do if your boss doesn't offer you a salary you find acceptable.


Don't...

  • Include your salary history on your resume. What you did in a job is much more important than what you were paid.

  • Lie about your previous pay rate. Employers can often verify your salary history through your reference checks.

  • Look at How Much Money Your Friends in Other Fields Are Making: You may be envious of your friends who are earning more money than you are. If they aren't working in the same field you shouldn't make those comparisons.

  • Talk About How Much Money You Need: When you are going through salary negotiations, don't tell your boss (or future boss) that you need to make more money because your bills are high, your house was expensive, or your child is starting college.

Interview Tips : Phone Interviews

Phone interviews seem to be growing more common as search committees try to make the difficult decision of who to invite for a campus interview. When you pass this level you will pass to the interview, and to campus for in-person interviews, and ultimately offered the position! If you are not interviewed by phone, these same questions are likely to be asked on site.

Some helpful hints:
  1. Introduce yourself clearly and directly. Engage in some “small talk” at the start of the interview, just as you would a face-to-face interview.
  2. Speak clearly into the receiver and modulate your voice. Your voice is the only way you have of showing eagerness, enthusiasm and zest for the job. Your voice reveals both your personality and your attitude toward the caller. Don’t forget to smile! It makes a big difference in a conversation, even on the telephone.
  3. Have your resume and the job advertisement with you for reference, and a pencil and some paper to make notes.
  4. Some students find that it helps to dress for a telephone interview as you would for a face-to-face interview – it often helps to psychologically prepare you for this form of business “meeting”.
  5. No matter how or where your interview is conducted, you should still have the same goal: to communicate to the interviewer that you are the best candidate for the position for which you are being interviewed. If the interview has been scheduled in advance, you should prepare as carefully as you would for a formal “sit down” in someone’s office.
  6. Eliminate any distractions from your immediate environment (desk toys, newspaper clippings, your shopping list). Dress professionally and maintain good posture. The one bonus to a telephone interview is that you can prearrange notes to prompt you and to keep you on track, but only if you can refer to them unobtrusively. You do not want the person on the other end of the line to hear you shuffling papers in the background!

Job Tips : Become a Job Magnet

One of the most frustrating parts of looking for a job is that you have to get other people to at least give you a chance to show them what you've got. Getting in the door is the hardest part.

But when you become an expert, others seek you out. Or, at least, when you knock on the door, at least some people will hear you out for a bit longer if they think you know something that could help them.

You want to be like a magnet-pulling people toward you-instead of having to push yourself on others. By creating good-quality content that helps to promote your expertise, you'll prove that you are also a problem solver. You'll show that you can add value, and therefore others who need what you have to offer will contact you.

Before you say to yourself that you aren't going to put the work into creating content that promotes your expertise, realize that your competition is doing it. In the past, being perceived as an expert was a nice-to-have asset. Today, it's a need-to-have element.

Target Your Employer 'Wish List
Your paper resume, social network profile and social media resume are the message. They are your advertisement--a commercial of you. As part of your preparation for crafting and fine-tuning that message to take advantage of leveraging online social networking and social media channels, you need to know who your audience is. Why? Because it will affect how you present-or, as it is known in marketing-"position"-yourself. So, beginning with the end in mind, and with some direction, ask yourself, "Where do I want to work?"

As you proceed in both your people and company search, you'll come up with new ideas for places you want to work, or you may find that you can't break in to your original targets, so you might modify your targets.

Examples of a 'top X' employer wish list could be the direct competitors to your prior or current firm. However, if you have signed a non-compete agreement, that could get sticky.

Note that while meant to protect a company from customer defections or loss of proprietary intellectual property, at their core, these agreements can be challengeable in court depending on legal precedents and the particular state in which the agreement was executed. That said, no company can legally prohibit you from earning a living. If they choose, big companies with dedicated legal departments and deep pockets can make your life difficult should you choose to test the agreement that you have signed.

Other examples of a top employer wish-list could be key suppliers or vendors to your past or current company, or select distributors/dealers in your firms' sales distribution channel.

The first step is to write down a list of the top 10 companies you'd like to work for. Of course, there is no magic in the number 10-you might have a top 20-but start with a limited set of targets-Ideally, no more than two dozen.
This targeted "short list" is important because it acts as a jumping-off point to your main personal network contacts-those most closely known by you.
You will be communicating this target list to them. If you list too many, you can end up causing confusion and dilute the effectiveness of those who may be able to help you.

Specific Industries and Types of Companies
Beyond writing down your wish list of specific companies, you will also want to think of three or four different types of companies that you are looking to target.

Take your wish list of specific companies, and think of the types of companies that they represent. Also think about grouping them by industry, and then make a list of those firms too.

Here's an example: Let's say you worked for, or are currently with, Dell Computer. You've already made a list of Dell's competitors (HP, IBM, Toshiba, etc.), as part of your wish list).
  • Been a PC lover? How about considering switching horses to Apple, and key MAC product vendors? There's a whole new universe of potential employers there you might never have thought of. Make a list.
  • What about chip/semiconductor manufacturers like Intel and AMD? Make another list.
  • How about monitor manufacturers like Nokia, Samsung, and the like? Make a third list.
  • Or perhaps look at a different angle and go behind the scenes to computer OEMs who sell to the Dells of the world. They make key parts like motherboards, soundcards, graphic cards, and SCSI cards. Keep going! Brainstorm and let your mind run wild.
That's the kind of "lateral thinking" that will propel your job search. Don't filter, and be open to anything because you never know where the next opportunity will come from. It might very well be one you never heard or thought of before.

Don't get too broad. Lack of focus in communicating your target industry of interest to others (e.g., healthcare industry) will get you very little help because it's too vague.

To maximize the help your personal network can provide in your company-search/people-search, your contacts need specific direction. A list of targeted firms does just that. You'll want to narrow that down and say, for example, that you are looking for a position in a company that deals in healthcare medical recordkeeping.

This is not to discourage you from thinking broadly but rather to encourage you to avoid scattering your energies in too many directions.

6- SEND YOUR RESUME VIA AN ONLINE JOB AD OR THE COMPANY WEB SITE, ONLY

Successful job-seekers use friends, LinkedIn contacts, and anybody else in their network to locate and reach out to contacts inside a target employer. Playing by the rules often gets your résumé pitched into the abyss at the far end of the e-mail address talent@xyzcorp.com. If you've got a way into the decision-maker's office, use it. Ignore advice that instructs you to send one résumé via the company Web site and wait (and wait, and wait) to hear from them.

7- NEVER SEND A PAPER RESUME

I've been recommending sending snail-mail letters to corporate job-search target contacts for three or four years now, and people tell me it's working. The response rate is higher, and the approach is friendlier. A surface-mail letter can often get you an interview in a case where an e-mail would get ignored or spam-filtered. One friend of mine sent her surface-mail résumé and cover letter to a major company's COO in New York, and got a call a week later from a general manager wanting to interview her in Phoenix, where she lives. She showed up at the interview to see her paper letter—yes, her actual, signed letter, on bond paper—and résumé sitting on his desk in Phoenix (probably conveyed via an old-fashioned Inter-Office envelope). An e-mail might have ended up in the COO's spam folder.

8- WAIT FOR THEM TO CALL YOU


You can't wait for companies to call you back. You've got to call and follow up on the résumés you've sent. If an ad says "no calls," use your LinkedIn connections to put you in touch with someone who can put in a word with the hiring manager. Don't sit and wait for the call to come. Your résumé is in a stack with 150 others, and if you don't push it up the pipeline, no one will.

9- GIVE THEM EVERYTHING.

Give them your résumé, your cover letter, and your time in a phone-screen or face-to-face interview. But don't give anyone your list of references until it's clear that mutual interest to move forward exists (usually after two interviews), and don't fill out endless tests and questionnaires in the hope of perhaps getting an audience with the Emperor. Let the employers know that you'd be happy to talk (ideally on the phone at first) to see whether your interests and theirs intersect. If there's a good match, you'll feel better about sharing more time and energy on whatever tests and exercises they've constructed to weed out unsuitable candidates. Maybe.

10- POST YOUR RESUME ON EVERY JOB BOARD

This is the best way in the world to get overexposed and undervalued in the job market. (Exception: If you're looking for contract or journeyman IT work, it's a great idea to post your credentials all over.) People will find your LinkedIn profile if they're looking and if you've taken the time to fill it out with pithy details of your background. If you're not employed, include a headline like "Online Marketer ISO Next Challenge" or "Controller Seeking Company Seeking Controller." Your résumé posted on a job board is a spam-and-scam magnet and a mark that your network isn't as robust as it might be. These aren't the signs you want to put out there. Use your network (vs. the world at large) to help you spread the job-search word.

The 10 Worst Job Tips Ever Part I

The world abounds in bad advice for job-seekers. Here are some spectacularly unsound directives. Nearly every day, someone sends me a bit of astounding job-search advice from a blog or a newsletter. Some of this advice seems to come directly from the planet X-19, and some of it seems to have been made up on the spot. Here are 10 of my favorite pieces of atrocious job-search advice, for you to read and ignore at all costs: 

1- DON'T WRAP IT UP
The Summary or Objective at the top of your résumé is the wrap-up; It tells the reader, "This person knows who s/he is, what s/he's done, and why it matters." Your Summary shows off your writing skills, shows that you know what's salient in your background, and puts a point on the arrow of your résumé. Don't skip it, no matter who tells you it's not necessary or important.
 
2- TELL US EVERYTHING
Another piece of horrendous job search advice tells job-seekers to share as much information as possible. A post-millennium résumé uses up two pages, maximum, when it's printed. (Academic CVs are another story.) Editing is a business skill, after all—just tell us what's most noteworthy in your long list of impressive feats.
 
3- USE CORPORATESPEAK
Any résumé that trumpets "cross-functional facilitation of multi-level teams" is headed straight for the shredder. The worst job-search advice tells us to write our résumés using ponderous corporate boilerplate that sinks a smart person's résumé like a stone. Please ignore that advice, and write your résumé the way you speak.
 
4- DON'T EVER POSTPONE A PHONE SCREEN
A very bad bit of job-search advice says "Whatever you do, don't ever miss a phone screen! Even if you're in the shower or on your way to be the best man at your brother's wedding, make time for that phone interview!" This is good advice is your job-search philosophy emphasizes groveling. I don't recommend this approach. Let the would-be phone-screener know that you're tied up at the moment but would be happy to speak at 7 p.m. on Thursday night, or some other convenient time. Lock in the time during that first call, but don't contort your life to fit the screener's schedule.
 
5- DON'T BRING UP MONEY
Do bring up money by the second interview, and let the employers know what your salary requirements are before they start getting ideas that perhaps you're a trust-fund baby and could bring your formidable skills over to XYZ Corp. for a cool $45,000. Set them straight, at the first opportunity.

Characteristics of a Good Employee

A good employee is like gold to a company. The employers always expect for employees with the following qualities and characteristics

Enthusiasm
The enthusiastic employees always have an interest in doing the job and thus the work will be complete in time and also with interest. Such employees create a positive atmosphere around them and do not say" I cannot". The positive atmosphere in their work space encourages the others also to work well.

Strong Work Ethic
Ethics is very important in terms of an employee. They must be hard working and that is what any employee will look forward to. The employee must finish his job and then move to the other one rather than being just enthusiastic and keep jumping from one work to the other without completing any of them.

Motivate and Initiate
The majority of employees just indulge in the on time work finish it and when it is time to go they leave. There is no use for the company as well as himself with such a behavior. Initiative must be taken and also motivate the others to do the works or even take the leadership and guide others. The employee himself should approach his upper level and ask for the other jobs rather than to wait and do what they just ask to do. He must also find creative solutions.

Reliability
The skills, talents and the behavior of the employee must make the employer believe that the employee is reliable and can be trusted for any work. Reliability not only refers to the honesty of the person but also the ability to finish a work in time.

Great Communication Skills
Communication skill is a major factor in terms of getting employed. The employee must know how to communicate with his colleagues and also his employers or the upper level of the organization. He must have the basics to understand and interpret what his employer informs or the work that he is given.

Positive Attitude
A good employee must always have a positive attitude and should always believe in "can do" for everything. If something goes wrong he should not be broken and should come back with the same attitude he had while doing the same work first time.

Honesty and Integrity
The employee must be honest and should not cheat, steal or betray his employer or even his colleagues. If an employee gets his wages for a full day he must have given the output for the full day. The personal phone calls can be avoided during work time and also the usage of the company phones for personal use should not be there.

Punctuality
On time to work and finishing a work in time refers to the punctuality. The employee must inform his superior if in case it will get late and should not take advantage of it.

Flexibility and Adaptability
The employee must be easy going with the others. People are always different from each other and it is not possible for everyone to be the same thus the employee must be easily flexible with the others. They must also get adapted with the surroundings to work properly.

Interpersonal Skills
The employee must always possess good interpersonal skills. He must have a neat physical appearance like properly pressed shirts and a neatly combed hair. He must also have a proper slang of his language.

Team Work Skills
The employee must be able to adapt for the team works and work efficiently with his team. He must be able to attain the company's goal working together as a team.

Loyalty
The employee must never let down his workplace to others. He must not talk bad about his own workplace. The confidential matters of the company must not be discussed with unknown and unauthorized people.

Speak from your heart. If you believe in what you say, than others need to hear it. All confident speakers fall in the P2 (passion plus persistence). Be sure your speech contains your most fundamental beliefs and comes from authenticity.

1. Prepare, prepare, prepare!

2. Practice in front of a full-length mirror, for small groups. Join Toastmasters. www.toastmasters.org

3. Be positive. “I am a good speaker/trainer.”

4. Expect to be nervous. [deep breathe, exercise by walking, stretch, visualize your success, meditate] Make anxiety your ally. Increase your energy; heighten your awareness.

5. Focus on your audience. [It is NOT about you. You are there to help your audience]

6. Simplify. Use your time wisely and keep your presentation clear and simple so that your audience can understand what you are saying.

7. Connect with your audience. Look people in the eye, one at a time, as you speak to them. The audience wants you to succeed.

8. Act confident. Smile. Hold your chin up. Stick your chest out. When you do this, you will feel confident. Remember, YOU are the authority on the subject and they want to hear what you have to say.

9. Use humor wherever possible.

10. Offer the right message mix (inform, persuade, entertain, interact)

11. Establish credibility by the use of facts, statistics, and stories.

12. Learn from your mistakes. Making mistakes is part of your learning process. Scott Adams, creator of Dilbert, said, “Creativity is allowing yourself to make mistakes. Art is knowing which ones to keep.”

Careers : Top Ten Ways to Improve Your Communication Skills

1) Listen without judgment. The key to good communication is listening well. Save your judging for later after you have heard and understood what was said.
 
2) Listen with the willingness to be swayed to the other person's opinion. No obligation to actually being swayed, but stay open to the option.
 
3) Listen without thinking about what you will say next. Take time before you respond.
 
4) Do not be invested in being right. Being right is not the point. If you must be right, you are not able to listen nor communicate because you have set up a barrier already. If you are always right that means the other person is always wrong. That cannot be true.
 
5) If your mind wanders, ask for repetition. We all are subject to distraction. Try to stay focused.
 
6) In all cases repeat back what you heard and ask if it is correct.
 
7) Listen to yourself. Find quiet moments and pay attention to what you are hearing from yourself. Does your body tighten up about certain issues. Body language is not something to read only in other people.
 
8) Say it honestly, but with consideration for the listener's feelings. Be polite, respectful and sincere.
 
9) Understand and acknowledge that most things are not black or white, but somewhere in a gray area. Get comfortable with gray.
 
10) Have integrity and build trust. Don't say what you don't mean. Don't promise what you won't or can't fulfill. Follow through with any committments you make.
 
Good listening skills take practice. Specific coaching may be necessary if you find you have communication issues with your boss, colleagues, subordinates, partners or personal relationships.

Although aggressiveness is a turn-off, being passive gives the indication that you are not sure of yourself or your qualifications. Keep eye contact when answering questions or when the interviewer is speaking directly to you. Smile occasionally to show your interest and enthusiasm. Keeping a steady gaze on the interviewer can be disturbing to an interviewer. Look away occasionally. Lean forward to show that you are interested in what the interviewer is saying. Speak in a concise and clear voice. If you have problems annunciating certain words, don’t try to use them on an interview. If this is difficult for you, practice with a mirror and pay attention to your facial expressions. You are what you believe.
Act as if you had the job. What would you do if you had this position? How would you act? How would a person in this position act and speak? What are your responsibilities in this position? 3. Know The Company
 
Know the business.
I once sat on a couple of interviews where the interviewees did not do any research on the company. This sends a message that you are looking for any job, not this specific job. Once you’re interview is scheduled, get on the net and start finding out everything you can about the company. A good place to start is www.hoovers.com, which gives you industry information, top competitors, names of CEO, etc. If you’d like to know what current or former employees have to say about the company, try www.wetfeet.com. Beware of disgruntled postings. Call the company headquarters and ask for the marketing department to get specific information. Weave your research into the interview by stating. I read an article in the Wall Street Journal, which mentioned that your company is thinking about XYZ. This lets the interviewer know that you have taken the time to know more about the company. You can ask questions about something you read, but don’t challenge them or you’ll come across as a know-it-all.
 
4. Be Prepared
 
Know what to say.
Most interviewers ask the same standard questions about your strengths, weaknesses, former employers, work history. If you are being interviewed by several people, this might be a good cop, bad cop situation. Pay attention to who is playing bad cop, they are looking for signs of weakness and dishonesty. To be well prepared, before the interview, write out all your accomplishments, both personal and professional. List your strengths and weaknesses. Be honest, it’s easier to remember the truth than it is a lie. Extra Tip: Write out situations in which you have demonstrated: leadership skills, determination, stress management, creativity, and flexibility. Be prepared to answer the question: Why do you want this job? If you’re not sure, reevaluate your decision. If you arrive a few minutes early, review what you wrote in the waiting room before the interview.
   
5. Ask For The Job
 
You get what you ask for.
The most important step in the interviewing process is one most people miss. ASK FOR THE JOB! Most interviewers are waiting for that closure. If you have done everything exceptionally well during the interviewing process, but have not asked for the job, you’ve just wasted an interview. Asking for the job shows the potential employer that you are assertive, confident and right for the job. It might feel uncomfortable, but this is your only chance to ask for something you really want. Make sure your voice is firm and you make eye contact. Think of it as your closing argument, you’ve got to win over the jury. You should also ask the interviewer if he or she thinks you are right for the job. Even if they tell you something unpleasant, think of it as a lesson learned. However, do yourself a favor and ask for the job. You deserve it!
